Pinball Machines Were Sneakier Than You Think [Pinball]

There's a great read over at Cheap Talk about how digital pinball machines changed the industry, back when there still was an industry. They were big tables where you flick a ball around, but they were smarter than you think.

In the olden days of pinball, there wasn't much to adjust. Free game scores were hard wired into the machine and couldn't be changed. But with the introduction of Williams High Speed in 1986, things got more complicated.

The new machines would dynamically adjust the free play score based on an algorithm. It also introduced a method where if you had already scored a free game, it was impossible to win a random free game.

The post goes into much more detail over at Cheap Talk, but ultimately, these algorithms, exploits, and the layouts of the tables themselves got so complicated that new players couldn't figure out how to master them. And, as we all know, pinball faded into the night. If you're at all a fan of pinball, it's an interesting read. Head over to check it out. [Cheap Talk via Retro Thing]

Specifically, Amazon and Dell have both cut prices on the smartphone to $150 and $120, respectively. The news comes just one day after news broke of price cuts by online retailers on other devices not named iPhone: the Palm Pre and Pixi.

The Observer From Fringe Has Been Haunting the Entire Fox Network

The Observer From Fringe Has Been Haunting the Entire Fox Network

We’ve said this before, but we’ll say it again: The way that Fox has scheduled Fringe this season has made it really difficult to remain a fan of the show. It reminds us a lot of how ABC used to handle Lost, before they wised up and started running the show in one long (mostly uninterrupted) block. That said, you have to give the suits over there some credit for their tremendous execution of a stealth viral-marketing campaign for the show that revolves around the show’s most mysterious character, the Observer. As Variety points out today, the Observer has been making appearances on a whole slew of Fox broadcasts that don’t have the word Fringe in their title, such as American Idol, NFL broadcasts, and NASCAR events. When the Observer appears on camera, he is never mentioned by name, nor does a Chyron pop up to signal viewers to “Watch Fringe on Tuesdays!” Maybe corporate synergy isn’t such a bad thing, after all?

Just in case you’re not an everyday Fringe watcher, here’s a brief primer on the Observer for you:

I personally think this is a great marketing ploy

OMG!!! The latest installment of the "Twilight" saga, "New Moon," is nigh upon us! Will you be celebrating with fast food?

The folks at Burger King think so. They're marketing a special BK Burger Shots six-pack for all you werewolves and, ahem, blood-sucking vampires out there. The mini burgers come with a special "Gift of Holiday Value" — coupons for "Twilight" merch masquerading as collector's cards. Think of them as a vampire Valpak of savings.

Is any of this worth it? Find out after the jump.
