Trials and Tribulations

Just another WordPress.com weblog

Tumblr BackupIt's easy to back up your blog if it resides in a database on your server, but what do you do if it's hosted by someone else? I recently moved from a self-hosted blog to Tumblr, and while I couldn't be happier, the backup issue was making me nervous. That is, until I found out that the folks at Tumblr have been thinking about it too, and they recently released a beta backup tool for Mac users called Tumblr Backup. There's no Windows version yet, but the "yet" on their sites makes me hopeful that it's coming.

The tool is very simple and straightforward. You log into your Tumblr account via Tumblr Backup, then point it to the blog you want to back up (if you happen to have multiple Tumblr blogs), give it a folder to save the backup to, and press the "Start backup" button. What you'll end up with are flat HTML files and most media files that you've uploaded that can be viewed in any browser, with a very basic style. If you've customized your theme, it is backed up as a separate theme file, as is the description you've written for your site.

Like Tumblr, the Tumblr Backup tool is simple and straightforward and gets the job done. Let's hope a Windows version is coming as soon as this one graduates from beta status.
